Woodbury v Honiton - Match Report

Rain was the final winner yet again, as for the third time in four weeks Woodbury's 1st XI were unable to complete their fixture at home to Honiton.

With conditions already damp, it was always going to be an important toss to win and James Kavanagh had no hesitation in inviting the visitors to bat first. Neil Richards soon made the breakthrough with two early wickets and Matt Plowman removed danger man Phil Tansley for 31. Kevin Kelly (23) rebuilt the innings with the help of Steve Rampaul (11) and Kevin Slynn (11), and at 93 for four a good target looked possible, but five wickets for ten runs destroyed the Honiton innings, with Kevin Miller taking five for 15 from 7.2 overs, with James Taylor holding four catches. Mark Davies took two for 27 from ten overs, as Honiton were bowled out for 118 in 41.2 overs.

Tom Wilson got the run chase off to a good start with a quick-fire 20, including 19 from Kelly's two overs, but the introduction of Tansley caused Woodbury's top order problems as 26 without loss soon became 48 for four, with Kavanagh back in the pavilion for 17. With rain falling again, Mark Jellicoe (11no) and Tim Kirk (11no) got the innings back on track adding 23 for the fifth wicket, before the umpires decided conditions were unsafe to continue. The game was still in the balance at this stage and whilst efforts were made to restart, conditions didn't improve enough to satisfy the umpires and play was abandoned with Woodbury 71 for four in 22 overs.

Woodbury 11pts, Honiton 9pts.
