Woodbury v Halberton & Sampford Peverell - Match Report

Woodbury got their league season off to a near-perfect start with a 19-point haul in a 149-run victory against an under-strength Halberton & Sampford Peverell.

Invited to bat on a damp track and heavy outfield, Woodbury knew from experience that any treble-figure score could prove taxing to chase on their large Town Lane ground, and with Tim Greenslade (34) and Jeff Cooper (25) adding 72 for the first wicket in 24 overs, the foundations had been laid. Skipper James Kavanagh scored a quick-fire 71 (5 fours and 5 sixes) putting on 62 for the fourth wicket with Tom Wilson (17), before Matt Plowman (16no) scored 13 off the last over to take the score to 196 for seven.

Halberton never looked like challenging and after reaching 24 for one soon fell away to Mark Davies, who took five for 4 in eight overs, including a hat-trick. Matt Plowman (two for 14), Martin Cook (two for 3) and Darryl Stevens (one for 10) were the other wicket takers as the visitors were bowled out for 47 in 25 overs.
