Woodbury CC Match Reports

After the washout of the previous weekend, Woodbury's season got under way with victories against Sunset and Kentisbeare and defeat at Budleigh Salterton, as the majority of players were given the chance to blow away the cobwebs before the league starts on May 3.

It was the landlords against the tenants on Friday, with Sunset the opposition in a 20-over match. Batting first Woodbury posted 101 for 3, with 1st XI skipper James Kavanagh retiring on 44 (4 fours and 2 sixes), with good support from 'Chalky' White (14) and new player Richard Hill (16). Sunset were restricted to 88 for 6, with two wickets apiece for Rob Jones and Ryan Barton.

A visit to Kentisbeare on Saturday saw a surprisingly comfortable victory, as what amounted to a 2nd XI recorded a 10-wicket verdict. It was the teenagers who did the damage with the ball as Matt Plowman took five for 27 and Ross Jarvis two for 9, as the home team were bowled out for 48 in 12.1 overs. Plowman's haul included three wickets in four balls and two in two as Kentisbeare collapsed from 29 for 0. Only 7.1 overs were required to pass the target, as Richard Hill (21no) and Mickey Beer (18no) completed the win on 54 for 0, with Beer hitting the winning six.

The weekend closed with a 98-run defeat at Budleigh Salterton, with Aussie Steve Spoljaric proving a class apart from any batsmen that Woodbury would face, scoring 95 before retiring in a score of 239 for 6. Martin Cook returned three for 31 and David Allen two for 38. The run chase never looked on once Kavanagh and Greenslade were dismissed cheaply, but Mark Jellicoe (46) and Tom Wilson (21) got useful runs under the belt before Woodbury were dismissed for 141 with five balls remaining.

The serious business starts this weekend, with the 1st XI at home to Halberton & Sampford Peverell in the reorganised E Division. The 2nd XI travel to Kilmington in D Division East.
