On Sunday 19th March, Woodbury Cricket Club held their first ever "Crickathlon" and raised £1,000 for the club funds and £500 for charity.
The Crickathlon, perhaps the first in the UK, involved teams organised in pairs. They were challenged to throw cricket balls through a hoop with a time penalty for each miss and then with each pair using one bicycle to cover a five mile route around Woodbury and Woodbury Salterton. The event ended with a final play-off involving a timed team relay race on the all-weather pitch with much depending on the speed with which pads and gloves were put on and taken off!
Chairman Valentine DuBuisson said "Crickathlon is an amalgam of 'cricket' and 'triathlon'. Until this year the club, since 1996, has held an annual triathlon of 200 metres swimming, six miles cycling and three miles running. This time we thought we would lighten the load for our fun and fund raising event."
A team of Senior cricketers won the event and a sponsored event for the junior cricketers, who ran circuits of the cricket ground, raised over £200.
Money raised for the club will go towards the store extension at the pavilion and the purchase of an outfield mower to go in it.
